Tunel I, 2017, graphite, sanguine, and wax on folded paper
In photos, the work looks like it was done in a sketch book. Actually, many of the images are quite large. The impact of their size is strong, and the images resonate strongly. Vásquez de la Horra makes you stop and think and look closer. This is really delicious work. Keith Widyolar, February 20, 2018  Read more at newyorklatinculture.com

Sandra Vásquez de la Horra’s Guide to the Americas In Vásquez de la Horra’s cosmology, we encounter fantastical creatures on whatever journey we take, whether it is to a real place or an imagined future. I first wrote about Sandra Vásquez de la Horra’s post-symbolist drawings on wax-soaked paper in the spring of 2016, when she had a show at David Nolan. As with all artists wor…

Sandra Vásquez de la Horra appropriates popular iconographies and expressions through processes of compilation, association, and hybridization, creating drawings where figures, scenes, and allegories from dissimilar times are twisted in a contemporary mythology and personal alphabet. With graphite, the artist draws over different recycled paper types and dips them in wax, as inscriptions traversed by multiple layers in the manner of a palimpsest.

SUBVERSIVE INTENSITY OF THE IMAGE NARRATIVES OF LIBERATED FANTASY Sandra Vásquez de la Horra’s drawings are alarming and frightening, barbaric and exotic, obtrusive and seductively corporeal, enigmatic, hallucinative and ghostly. They appear alien and at the same time very familiar, like a remembered experience, as intimate as if they somehow originated from our own world, our own life.
